3D Printed Overhead Camera Bracket

This project was commissioned from a patron who wished to emulate my filming style for his own Panasonic Lumix GH4 camera. I was more than happy to oblige as It would be very useful to me. The design is freely available on my Thingiverse Page (https://www.thingiverse.com/backofficeshow) so you can make your own!

You can watch a video about it by following the link at the bottom of the page.

Iterative design

To start with I basically booted up the CAD software and took a ruler to the camera. It took 3 Versions to get to the ultimate design, but the 3D printing process really lets you speed through the development in this way. This is because the printer has a 'fast' mode that can draft a model in a short space of time. I designed it with multiple reinforced mounting holes allowing regular hardware to be used to screw it to shelves etc. It is also highly resistant to compression, thus you can use a G-Clamp on it as a mounting solution.

CAD MODELLING & Printing

It was the first time I used this particular free CAD package, however it was really easy to get to grips with and I think for this sort of design it is more than adequate. A great little tool to get going on. If you are particularly happy with your 3D design you can always send it away to get professionally 3D printed or machined, however, the strength of the PLA/ABS material is incredible and far in excess of a consumer grade product you could buy.
