This is definitely worth doing! This is the second Game Gear I have upgraded to TFT. Game Gears are pretty hard work these days with their washed out screens, and this modification to a modern TFT display is 100% worth it.
It’s the same Game Gear from the recent free recap video, and I found a proper recapping kit and a box of other pieces waiting for it. The finished screen fills more or less edge to edge, which is pretty good. There is still something going on with the sound, probably a filter that needs changing, so that is one for another day.
